The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is a comprehensive Himalayan journey designed for travellers seeking a complete experience of central Nepal's alpine biomes and mountain cultures.

Important Arrival and International Flight Requirements

Day 1 Arrival: Day 1 is your official landing date at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu.

International Airfare Exclusions: Travellers must independently book and pay for their international round-trip airfare. International flights are not included in the package price.

Flight Flexibility: Return international flights should be booked with flexible conditions to account for potential domestic flight or road delays in the mountains.

Travel Insurance: All trekkers must hold comprehensive travel insurance explicitly covering high-altitude trekking up to 5,500 m, emergency medical treatment, trip interruption, and helicopter evacuation.

Journey Summary

After arriving in Kathmandu on Day 1, Day 2 provides sightseeing and a detailed trek orientation. The route travels west by road along the Marsyangdi River valley to Besisahar and Bhratang. Trekkers enter alpine terrain through Upper Pisang and Ngawal before arriving at Manang (3,540 m).

Following an acclimatisation day in Manang, the route side-trips west to Tilicho Base Camp (4,150 m) and Tilicho Lake (4,919 m)—one of the world's highest lakes. Rejoine the main circuit route at Yak Kharka and proceed to Thorong Phedi (4,450 m).

The physical crux of the journey is crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416 m / 17,769 ft), descending into the rain-shadow landscape of Mustang and the holy shrine at Muktinath (3,800 m). Drive down through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Jomsom, take short domestic flights to Pokhara and Kathmandu, and conclude the itinerary on Day 17. The best seasons are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November).

High Altitude (Tilicho BC, Thorong Phedi)

Basic Mountain Lodges

Basic unheated rooms, squat/sit shared toilets, limited water availability, solar/generator power charging.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs when ascending faster than the human body can adapt to reduced atmospheric oxygen pressure. Fitness levels do not guarantee immunity.

  • Early Symptoms: Mild headache, fatigue, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, nausea, or disturbed sleep.
  • Severe Warning Signs (HAPE/HACE): Persistent vomiting, extreme breathlessness at rest, loss of physical coordination (ataxia), confusion, or severe chest tightness.
  • Prevention Strategies:
    • Pacing: Walk slowly (Bistari) without overexerting yourself.
    • Hydration: Drink 3 to 4 liters of fluid (water, herbal tea, clear soups) daily.
    • Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol, tobacco, or sleeping pills above 3,000 m.
    • Acclimatisation Days: Utilize built-in rest days at Namche and Dingboche fully.
  • Protocol: Report any symptoms to your lead guide immediately. If symptoms worsen, the primary treatment is immediate descent to a lower elevation.

Food

  • Teahouse Dining: Menus offer a blend of local Nepali, Sherpa, Gurung, and simple international meals.
  • Nepali Staple: Dal Bhat (steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickles) is cooked fresh daily and offers unlimited refill portions.
  • Other Meals: Porridge, eggs, pancakes, fried rice, chow mein, momos, soups, and pasta.
  • Dietary Needs: Vegetarian and vegan preferences are easily supported along the trail. Meat is available at lower elevations, but avoiding meat above Manang is recommended due to cold-chain limitations.

Drinking Water

  • Never drink untreated tap or stream water along the trail.
  • Reusable bottles or water bladders should be filled with boiled water purchased at teahouses or treated using purification tablets, SteriPENs, or filtration systems.
  • To reduce plastic pollution in the Annapurna Conservation Area, buying single-use plastic water bottles is discouraged.

  • Qualified Leadership: All trips are led by licensed, first-aid trained local guides with extensive experience crossing high passes.
  • Daily Health Checks: Guides track group oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) and pulse rates using pulse oximeters every morning and evening.
  • Trail Safety: Watch for loose scree, narrow ledges, and landslide zones (especially near Tilicho Base Camp). Yield to yaks and pack animals on the inside (cliff) side of the path.

Emergency Protocols: In cases of severe mountain sickness or physical injury, your guide will manage immediate descent or request a helicopter evacuation via our operations management team.

  • National Language: Nepali is spoken throughout the country.
  • Regional Languages: Gurung, Manange, and Thakali are spoken across villages in the Annapurna and Mustang districts.
  • English: Widely spoken by trekking guides, hotel staff, and lodge owners along the circuit.
  • Key Phrases:
    • Namaste: Universal greeting (Hello / Respect to you).
    • Dhanyabad: Thank you.
    • Bistari: Walk slowly (essential high-altitude advice!).

The Annapurna Circuit crosses various ethnic communities, transitioning from Gurung and Magar villages in the south to Manange and Thakali culture in the north.

  • Buddhist Etiquette: Walk to the left (clockwise direction) of chortens, mani walls, and prayer wheels.
  • Temple Etiquette: Remove shoes and hats before entering temples or monastery halls. Ask permission before taking photographs of monks or local residents.
  • Dress Modestly: Wear respectful clothing that covers shoulders and knees when passing through traditional villages.
  • Coordination: Emergency rescues are managed directly by Trekking Mate’s 24/7 Kathmandu control center in communication with your guide.
  • Helicopter Operations: Evacuation helicopters can land at designated spots (including Tilicho Base Camp, Yak Kharka, and Thorong Phedi) when weather permits.
  • Operational Limits: Rescue flights are subject to aviation safety rules, clear weather, and daylight hours.
  • Insurance Obligation: You must hold a valid insurance policy that guarantees payment for medical treatment and high-altitude helicopter rescue up to 5,500 m.

Expectation

Reality

Uninterrupted Wilderness

Roads now reach sections of the valley. Off-road trails are used where possible, but jeep traffic occurs near Besisahar and Jomsom.

Warm Teahouse Bedrooms

Bedrooms are unheated; heat is only provided by wood/yak-dung stoves in the central dining hall during dinner hours.

High-Speed Internet Access

Wi-Fi is available at most lodges for a small fee, but connection speed drops significantly during bad weather or peak hours.

Instant Helicopter Rescue

Helicopter evacuations require clear visibility and favorable wind conditions; bad weather can delay rescues.

Guaranteed Pass Crossing

Heavy snowfall or high winds can temporarily close Thorong La Pass. Safety may dictate waiting at Thorong Phedi or turning back.

International Flights

  • International airfare is not included in the tour package.
  • Travellers must book arrival into Kathmandu for Day 1 and departure for Day 17.

Domestic Ground & Air Transport

  • Overland Vehicles: Kathmandu to Besisahar/Bhratang and Muktinath to Jomsom transfers are operated using private 4WD jeeps suited for rough mountain roads.
  • Domestic Flights: Short twin-otter aircraft operate between Jomsom and Pokhara (~20 mins) and Pokhara and Kathmandu (~25 mins).
  • Baggage Allowance: Domestic mountain flights enforce a maximum weight restriction of 15 kg per person (10 kg hold luggage + 5 kg hand carry).

Weather conditions vary significantly across elevation zones along the Annapurna Circuit.

  • Spring (March to May): Stable conditions, clear mornings, and blooming rhododendron forests at lower elevations. Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C below 3,000 m, dropping to -5°C to -10°C at high camps like Thorong Phedi and Tilicho.
  • Autumn (September to November): Crystal clear skies, crisp air, and consistent mountain views. Daytime temperatures average 8°C to 15°C, with nighttime temperatures falling between -10°C and -15°C above 4,000 m.
  • Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rain at lower elevations, risk of landslides, cloud cover, and leeches. The region past Manang and Muktinath lies in a rain shadow, but access roads are heavily affected.
  • Winter (December to February): Clear days but severe cold (-15°C to -20°C at night). Heavy snowfall frequently blocks Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake routes.

Note: Mountain weather can change quickly. Wind, sudden snowfall, and cloud cover can occur unpredictably at any time of year.

In October 2024, I embarked on the unforgettable Thorong La trek with Subash, who made the journey extraordinary. Starting from Manang, we ventured to the breathtaking Tilicho Lake, whose stunning blue waters nestled amidst towering peaks left me in awe. The trail to Tilicho was adventurous, and though challenging, every step was worth it. Subash, fresh from expeditions to Manaslu and Everest, was a pillar of support, sharing stories, guiding us through tricky sections, and keeping spirits high. After Tilicho, we headed to Yak Kharka, staying at the cosy Gangapurna Hotel. The food, especially dhido and gundruk, remains unforgettable. Finally, crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters was a moment of immense pride, rewarded with panoramic views. Thanks to Subash, this trek was smooth and memorable. It’s a challenging yet life-changing experience I’ll treasure forever.

It was a fantastic and unforgettable moment with the Trek Mate as well as Mr. Subash G. Trek Mate is one of the well-organised trekking companies with a well-experienced guide and friendly staff where you can find the best service. I am thankful to Trek Mate for the well-educated and experienced trekking and peak climbing guide, Mr. Subash G. I was on the Langtang Valley trek and peak climbing to the northern side from the Kathmandu Valley near the Tibet border. It was a 15-day trek altogether. Subash G was very much, frankly, well educated, experienced, and well known about the culture and lifestyle of the local people. And he was also a great climber who had already successfully summited the world's highest mountain, Mt. Everest, Mt. Manaslu, one of the technical mountains, and many smaller peaks in Nepal, and he was planning to go further more. I was very happy to have such a guide. Missing you guys a lot. Hope to see you soon in 2025. I highly recommend Trek Mate for your trek in Nepal for the first time as well as for more treks in Nepal.
