The Ladakh Markha Valley Trek is a 14-day journey through the mountain landscapes of Ladakh in Northern India. The itinerary is designed for active travellers seeking a combination of Tibetan Buddhist culture, high-altitude trekking, and mountain scenery within the Zanskar range.

International Flight & Arrival Information

Day 1: Day 1 is designated as your arrival day in Delhi.

International Flights: Travellers must book their own international flights to India. International airfare is not included in the trekking package price. Travellers are responsible for booking their return international flights home. Return flights should be arranged with sufficient flexibility to accommodate potential domestic flight delays between Leh and Delhi.

Travel Insurance: Travellers must purchase comprehensive travel insurance prior to departure. Insurance policies must cover high-altitude trekking up to 5,200 m (17,060 ft), medical treatment, trip cancellation/interruption, and emergency helicopter evacuation.

Journey Summary

After arriving in Delhi, you take a domestic flight over the Himalayas to Leh (3,500 m / 11,483 ft), where initial days are dedicated to rest and cultural acclimatization. You will visit historic monasteries including Shey, Thikse, and Hemis, allowing your body to adapt to the thin air of the Ladakh plateau.

The trek begins at Spituk Gompa and follows the course of the Zingchen Valley into Hemis National Park, home to rare wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard. You will cross two high mountain passes: Ganda La (4,950 m / 16,240 ft) and the trek's highest point, Kongmaru La (5,150 m / 16,896 ft). The route traverses traditional Ladakhi hamlets, past ancient mani walls and ruined forts, to the high alpine pastures of Nimaling beneath Mt Kangyatse (6,400 m / 20,997 ft).

Daily walking durations range from 3 to 8 hours over varied terrain, including rocky paths, river crossings, and steep pass ascents. The trek concludes with a drive back to Leh, followed by a domestic flight to Delhi for your final departure.

overview iconIMPORTANT INFO.

Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert located in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.

Summer (June to September): The primary trekking season. Daytime temperatures in valleys range from 15°C to 25°C. At higher elevations and campsites (such as Nimaling), daytime temperatures drop to 5°C–10°C, and night temperatures routinely fall between -5°C and 5°C.

Wind & Sun: UV exposure is severe due to high elevation and low humidity. Strong winds often develop in mountain passes and high valleys in the afternoon.

Precipitation: While Ladakh receives minimal rainfall, brief showers or high-altitude snowfall can occur rapidly.

Winter: Extremely cold (-15°C to -30°C) with passes blocked by snow; trekking is not conducted on this route during winter.

Hotels (Delhi & Leh): Mid-range, comfortable hotels featuring private en-suite bathrooms, hot water, and standard amenities.

Trekking Campsites / Homestays: During the trek, accommodation consists primarily of spacious two-person alpine tents provided by Trekking Mate. In some villages, simple family-run homestays or lodges may be used.

Facilities on Trail:  Campsites utilize portable toilet tents. Running water is unavailable at high camps; washing water is provided by the crew in limited quantities. Charging facilities and Wi-Fi are generally non-existent once you leave Leh until you complete the circuit.

Meals on Trek: Freshly prepared by our trekking cook team using portable stoves. Meals combine Indian, Tibetan, and international dishes (e.g., rice, lentils, flatbreads, pasta, vegetable curries, porridge, eggs).

Dietary Requirements: Vegetarian, vegan, and simple dietary restrictions can be accommodated if communicated prior to departure.

Water: Safe drinking water is provided during the trek. Stream water is boiled or treated with purification agents before distribution. Travellers must carry two refillable 1-litre water bottles or a hydration bladder. Disposable plastic water bottles are discouraged to reduce environmental waste.

Qualified Leadership: Guides are certified in mountain safety and wilderness first aid, with experience operating in high-altitude environments.

Health Monitoring: Daily health checks are conducted using pulse oximeters to monitor blood oxygen saturation and heart rates.

Trail Communication: Guides carry satellite or radio communication devices for emergency coordination where mobile networks are unavailable.

Risk Management: The itinerary includes built-in acclimatisation days in Leh. Trekking routes are subject to real-time adjustments based on weather, pass conditions, and group well-being.

Official Languages: Hindi and English are widely spoken across India.

Local Language: Ladakhi (an Archaic Tibetan dialect) is the primary language spoken in villages throughout the Markha Valley.

Guide Communication: Your primary guide and tourism personnel speak fluent English. Basic English is understood in Leh's shops and hotels.

Ladakh’s culture is deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.

Monastic Etiquette: Remove shoes before entering temple halls. Walk clockwise around stupas, chortens, and mani walls.

Photography: Always request permission before photographing local residents, monks, or the interior of sacred shrines.

Dress Code: Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and traditional villages (cover shoulders and knees).

Community Interaction: Respect local customs and avoid giving money or candy directly to children in villages.

International Flights

International flights to and from Delhi are not included. Travellers are required to make their own international travel arrangements. Ensure arrival in Delhi aligns with Day 1 of the itinerary.

Domestic Flights

The Delhi–Leh–Delhi sectors are operated by domestic Indian carriers. Flight time is approximately 1.5 hours each way. Flight operation depends strictly on clear visibility in Leh; short-notice delays or re-routings can occur. Baggage limits are typically restricted to 15 kg checked luggage and 7 kg cabin baggage per person.

Ground Transport

Private air-conditioned vehicles are used for Delhi transfers. In Ladakh, four-wheel-drive or high-clearance private vehicles (such as Mahindra Scorpio, Xylo, or Tempo Travellers) are utilized to handle mountain roads.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a primary consideration on this itinerary, as you fly directly to 3,500 m (11,483 ft) and reach a maximum altitude of 5,150 m (16,896 ft).

Prevention: The itinerary allocates full acclimatization days in Leh before physical trekking begins. Walk at a steady, slow pace, stay hydrated (3–4 litres of water daily), and avoid alcohol during the early days of the trip.

Symptoms: Mild symptoms include headaches, light nausea, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

Management: Inform your guide immediately if you experience symptoms. Continued ascent with active AMS symptoms is dangerous. If symptoms persist or worsen, descent to a lower elevation is the primary effective treatment.

Medical Facilities: Basic medical centers exist in Leh. Advanced medical care requires evacuation to Delhi.

Evacuation Procedures: In the event of severe illness or injury on the trail, initial evacuation is conducted on foot or horseback to the nearest roadhead.

Helicopter Evacuation: Helicopter rescue in Ladakh is operated by military services and requires official clearance, clear weather, and operational availability. It is not instantaneous.

Insurance Mandate: Travellers must hold an insurance policy that explicitly covers medical evacuation by helicopter and high-altitude rescue up to 5,200 m (17,060 ft).

 Arranged by Traveller

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity beyond departure date).
  • Indian Tourist Visa (obtained via the official Indian e-Visa portal prior to arrival).

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation expenses.
  • Helicopter evacuation and mountain rescue search fees.
  • Trip cancellation, curtailment, and delay coverage.

Fitness Requirement: Moderate to Challenging. You should be capable of walking 6 to 8 hours per day over uneven, steep, and stony ground carrying a light daypack (5–7 kg).

Preparation: Engage in regular cardiovascular training (running, swimming, cycling) and hill walking with a weighted pack for 2–3 months prior to departure. Leg strength and core stability training are strongly recommended.

Mental Readiness: Prepare for basic living conditions, variable weather, and sustained physical effort at high elevations.

In October 2024, I embarked on the unforgettable Thorong La trek with Subash, who made the journey extraordinary. Starting from Manang, we ventured to the breathtaking Tilicho Lake, whose stunning blue waters nestled amidst towering peaks left me in awe. The trail to Tilicho was adventurous, and though challenging, every step was worth it. Subash, fresh from expeditions to Manaslu and Everest, was a pillar of support, sharing stories, guiding us through tricky sections, and keeping spirits high. After Tilicho, we headed to Yak Kharka, staying at the cosy Gangapurna Hotel. The food, especially dhido and gundruk, remains unforgettable. Finally, crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters was a moment of immense pride, rewarded with panoramic views. Thanks to Subash, this trek was smooth and memorable. It’s a challenging yet life-changing experience I’ll treasure forever.

It was a fantastic and unforgettable moment with the Trek Mate as well as Mr. Subash G. Trek Mate is one of the well-organised trekking companies with a well-experienced guide and friendly staff where you can find the best service. I am thankful to Trek Mate for the well-educated and experienced trekking and peak climbing guide, Mr. Subash G. I was on the Langtang Valley trek and peak climbing to the northern side from the Kathmandu Valley near the Tibet border. It was a 15-day trek altogether. Subash G was very much, frankly, well educated, experienced, and well known about the culture and lifestyle of the local people. And he was also a great climber who had already successfully summited the world's highest mountain, Mt. Everest, Mt. Manaslu, one of the technical mountains, and many smaller peaks in Nepal, and he was planning to go further more. I was very happy to have such a guide. Missing you guys a lot. Hope to see you soon in 2025. I highly recommend Trek Mate for your trek in Nepal for the first time as well as for more treks in Nepal.
